Title: Winace Malformed Filename Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Winace is a file compression/decompression tool for Microsoft Windows platforms. It supports various formats (UUE, CAB, JAR, ZIP, RAR, TAR, GZ, TAR.GZ, LZA, LHA, etc.).
Winace is prone to a denial-of-service vulnerability because it fails to perform adequate boundary checks on user-supplied data. The vulnerability occurs when handling '.ace' files containing an excessively large filename.
An attacker can exploit this issue by enticing an unsuspecting user to download a malicious file and compress it through Windows Explorer by right-clicking on it.
Successfully exploiting this issue will allow attackers to crash Windows Explorer, denying service to legitimate users. Given the nature of this issue, attackers may also be able to run arbitrary code, but this has not been confirmed.
Winace 2.2 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.
Affected Products:
- Winace Winace 2.2
